Uses of Lidocaine Cream:
- It is used to stop pain.
- It is used to treat signs of hemorrhoids or rectal irritation.
- It is used to ease pain from skin irritations.
- It may be given to you for other reasons. Talk with the doctor.
What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Lidocaine Cream?
- If you have an allergy to lidocaine or any other part of lidocaine cream.
- If you are allergic to lidocaine cream; any part of lidocaine cream; or any other drugs, foods, or substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
- If there is an infection where lidocaine cream will be used.
- If you have broken skin or open wounds where the drug will be used.
- If you have swollen skin, numbness, or are not able to feel pain where the drug will be used.
- If a large area needs to be treated.
This is not a list of all drugs or health problems that interact with lidocaine cream.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take lidocaine cream with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.
What are some things I need to know or do while I take Lidocaine Cream?
- Tell all of your health care providers that you take lidocaine cream. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
- A severe blood problem called methemoglobinemia has happened with drugs like this one. The risk may be raised in people who have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, heart problems, or lung problems. The risk may also be raised while taking certain other drugs and in infants younger than 6 months of age. Tell your doctor if you have ever had methemoglobinemia.
- Talk with your doctor before you use other drugs or products on your skin.
- Do not use lidocaine cream for longer than you were told by your doctor.
- Do not scratch or rub the skin while it is numb. Do not let it get very hot or very cold.
- Do not put on cuts, scrapes, or damaged skin unless the doctor tells you to.
- Avoid use of heat sources (such as sunlamps, tanning beds, heating pads, electric blankets, heat lamps, saunas, hot tubs, heated waterbeds). Avoid long, hot baths or sunbathing. Your temperature may rise and cause too much drug to pass into your body.
- This medicine may cause harm if swallowed. If lidocaine cream is swallowed, call a doctor or poison control center right away.
- Different brands of lidocaine cream may be for use in different ages of children. Talk with the doctor before giving lidocaine cream to a child.
- Use with care in children. Talk with the doctor.
- If you are 65 or older, use lidocaine cream with care. You could have more side effects.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks to you and the baby.
How is this medicine (Lidocaine Cream) best taken?
Use lidocaine cream as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.
All rectal products:
- Wash your hands before and after use.
- Put on clean, dry skin.
- Put lidocaine cream on as you have been told by the doctor or on the package labeling.
All skin products:
- Do not take lidocaine cream by mouth. Use on your skin only. Keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes (may burn).
- If you get lidocaine cream in any of these areas, rinse well with water.
- Wash your hands before and after use. Do not wash your hands after use if putting this on your hand.
- Clean affected part before use. Make sure to dry well.
- Put on clean, dry, healthy skin.
- Do not use coverings (bandages, dressings, make-up) unless told to do so by the doctor.
What do I do if I miss a dose?
